Monday's Unsolicited Parenting Advice

The test is positive..a baby is on the way! Your life is forever changed starting the instant you see the plus sign. One of the first things women tend to do (after spreading the wonderful news of course) is what we do best..start shopping and picking out baby items. Back in 2000 when I registered for my baby shower one of the very first items I picked was the Fisher Price Ocean Sounds Aquarium. Six years later they are no longer making it but I did find the equivalent at Target - The Fisher -Price Soother Flutterby Dreams. "Fisher-Price baby soother offers 3 different ways to soothe baby: music and lights; motion, music and lights; music and ceiling lights• Music and lights play 4 different songs plus nature sounds and soft lights, while motion, music and lights offer fluttering, birdlike motion plus music and soft lights• Music and ceiling light show features music and nature sounds plus ceiling light show• Easily attaches to crib or stands alone on nightstand or dresser• Requires 4 D alkaline batteries and runs at 8-minute intervals with the touch of a button" Sounds great doesn't it? Until you reach the last line where it says 4 D batteries. Trust me, this is the problem. Daughter #1 has the Ocean Sounds Aquarium and we turn it on every evening when we put her in bed. The lights flicker on the ceiling as she listens to the sound of ocean waves...what could be more soothing for a baby? Fast forward to the age when she is old enough to turn it on herself and is now turned on 5-10 times a night compared to once and next thing you know you are feeding the thing batteries like they are going out of style. Daughter #1 even took hers into her big girl bed where it continued to suck batteries dry at amazingly fast speeds. For years we were slaves to it until it finally broke down. So what is the wisdom here you wonder? Get something that plugs into the wall. Don't put anything on your crib that takes batteries. I suggest the HoMedics Sound SPA Relaxation Sound Machine for $24.99. You can plug it into the wall and it plays all night blocking out any noises that could wake the baby. Bonus: It also sounds great over the monitor..I sleep better too.

Monday's Unsolicited Parenting Advice

Monday's will now be parenting advice day. The advice will come from yours truly and is not in any way meant to take the place of any advice you receive from a "professional".
So here we go...when my second daughter (Lily) was a newborn, I used the Newborn baby wipes at every diaper change. They are made to be more gentle on a baby's skin, right? Well, maybe so and maybe that will work on most babies but my little Lily ended up with the worst diaper rash EVER! We are talking open sores on her bum. I did everything from letting her air out to cloth diapers to Beardoux's Butt Paste and the rash lasted at least 2 1/2 weeks. It was very hard on me and Lily as you can imagine...and to make matters worse right in the middle of my cloth diaper trial (side note: cloth diapers did not work and they were a HUGE pain), we had the Blackout July 2003! Cloth diapers+no washing machine+summer heat+newborn baby=one stressed out mommy.
Anywho...the bottom line is I would never use wipes on a newborn baby again. If I go down that road again it will be warm wet cotton balls at least for the first 3-6 weeks. I am curious if anyone else has had a similar experience..if so let me know!
